Staying home to look after the kids and the house can be an extremely demanding job. There’s a lot of content out there on the internet geared towards stay at home moms but stay at home Dad jobs are rarely talked about.
Whether you’re a Mom or Dad you will have your work cut out for you.
With that being said, you still might have the drive and motivation to make some extra money and contribute financially to the household.
Not that the opportunities are all that different for Moms vs Dads but there are some specific things that Dads can take advantage of as far as online opportunity goes.
If you’re a stay at home Dad looking to make some money on the side, don’t worry there are a lot of opportunities for you to take advantage of.
What Are Your Interests?
When trying to come up with a way to make money online or at home, the best place to start is with your interests.
Let me just list a few examples of things you could have as interests and see if any of them match up with some of your actual interests.
- sports
- video games
- reading
- home maintenance
- lawn care/gardening
- cooking
- cleaning
- watching tv/movies
- pets
- fitness
- camping
- hiking/outdoors
- fishing
I could go on all day but I’m not going to. The purpose of that list is to get you thinking about what your interests are.
The reason I want you to think about your interests is that with the power of the internet, you can make money from YOUR interests.
What I’m talking about is blogging. Blogging is a really good way to make money online and it actually can turn into a six-figure income. Once you have a good following the sky is really the limit to how much money you can make.
The beauty of it is that you can blog about whatever your interest is. Stay at home Dad jobs are open for anything you choose to do.
If you have a genuine interest in something, there will be a heck of a lot of people who will share that interest and be interested in following your blog.
Once you have followers then you can start to make money. There are numerous ways to make money from a blog but the two best ways are from advertising and affiliate sales.
I like affiliate sales because you can make large commissions. Basically, it just means linking to a product that’s for sale on a different website. If someone clicks your link and buys the product, you’ll get a commission.
I go into much more detail about how affiliate marketing works in a different post. Check it out here, it’s called how affiliate marketing works. Or this other post on where to learn affiliate marketing the right way.
Bad At Writing?
Maybe you think you’re bad at writing or just don’t like it. That’s really common and it actually stops a lot of men from attempting to make money blogging.
Another thing is that I`m not a native English speaker and I do have typos and grammar errors, but if I can do it, you sure can too.
It’s a real myth that you need to be a good writer or even enjoy writing to be a successful blogger.
I know this sounds crazy since how blogging involves a lot of writing, let me explain.
First of all, you don’t need to be a good writer, you just need to be able to communicate.
Even typos and spelling errors aren’t that big of a deal. Actually, most blogs are full of typos and spelling errors.
The best bloggers are the ones who just write the exact same way that they would speak to someone.
This comes off much more authentic. Authenticity is important especially if your blogging about a topic that you’re supposed to be very knowledgeable about or interested in.
Let me give you an example…..
Pretend you know a lot about home security or about active sports and you want to start a blog about sports gear.
I personally wouldn’t want to listen to some guy who is incredibly articulate with impeccable writing skills tell me about security cameras, or at least I sure as hell wouldn’t care if his writing was any good.
As long as he can communicate effectively about the products and give sound advice that I trust, I’d rather take advice from a guy with hands-on experience than the guy who just paraphrases a few online reviews and makes them sound good.
So you might be thinking this all makes sense except for the fact that you don’t enjoy writing.
Well, that’s actually okay too. Blogging for the sake of making affiliate sales doesn’t have to mean a ton of writing.
Sure you’ll have to write reviews on security lights(using the same example) but they won’t have to be pages and pages of babbling on, just enough info to get the point across.
Not only that, but since you have a genuine interest in home security, you shouldn’t hate writing the reviews all that much.
Most likely you think you hate writing because in school you always had to write essays and reports on things that you had no interest in.
side hustles for dads are not more about your ability to write like Hemmingway, it`s more about how you connect with your readers.
Making Money
So you might still be a little unsure about how you can really profit from the blog. I want to explain a little more about the affiliate sales stuff.
I’ll stick with the home security example. If you had a home security blog, a large amount of your articles/blog posts would be product reviews.
So let’s pretend you write a review on a baby monitor. You could just write about your own experience with the product and maybe give it your own rating out of 5 or 10 or whatever you want.
Then you put a link to the monitor that takes people to amazon where they can purchase the product. If they do purchase it, your affiliate link has a tracking code on it and Amazon will pay you a commission.
Not only that but if the person hits your affiliate link and then ends up buying something else on Amazon in the next 24 hours, you’ll make a commission on anything they buy.
So you can see how this can really start to add up. Especially if you’re getting a lot of people to your blog each day. You really can make a full time living from it.
It’s not unheard of for blogs to make well over $10,000 per month just from affiliate sales, not to mention ads and other products you can sell on your blog on top of that.
How Do You Get Website Visitors?
Getting website visitors is the key to a successful blog. There are many tricks to get the visitors and this is all easy to learn with the proper training. Anyone who’s new to blogging/affiliate marketing should get trained here.
It’s by far the best and cheapest place to learn. To find out more about the program training program click here.
Before you start your training let me give you a brief rundown on how websites get visitors(traffic).
It’s all about the search engines.
There are lots of little tricks and techniques for getting the search engines to index your blog and you can learn about all of this in the Wealthy Affiliate training.
Picture this…….Somebody out in the world is looking to buy a new drill. I did a quick search using Jaaxy and discovered that every single month there is an average of 3498 people who search for the term “DeWalt drill”.
So if you use the term “Dewalt Drill” in your post, there’s a good chance that a chunk of those people will end up on your blog, reading your review, and clicking your affiliate link.
Enter any keyword and Try Jaaxy keyword tool free
Now there’s a little more to it than that, but that’s a very simple way of explaining how it works. So the more product reviews you have, the more people will end up on your website.
This is where the real money can start to add up. If you run a blog for a long time, all the content you have on your blog will continue to bring people to your website and make you money years after you’ve written it.
After a while, the blog will be on autopilot and continue making you money around the clock. But once you get a taste for the money, you’ll probably want to keep adding content to your blog in order to keep the traffic/money coming in.
That’s It, That’s All
So that pretty much sums it up. So like I said in the beginning of this article, you first need to think about what your interests are and then take it from there.
In all honesty, I never thought I’d be blogging. It just didn’t seem like the kind of thing I could ever see myself doing. I usually like to work with my hands, work outdoors or work with people.
For those reasons blogging never appealed to me. Things changed when I started to see the great lifestyle that blogging was giving other people.
I started seeing the freedom that blogging could give you. Since you can make your own hours and just work when it’s convienient for you, you’re able to take care of your kids, family or whatever other priorities you have and then work on your blog in your spare time.
There’s no rule to how much time you need to put into it. Of course, the more time you put into it, the faster it will make money but if you’re already at home looking after the family or doing something else with your time, why not just put in an hour here and there on the blog until it starts to make money?
Just imagine getting an extra $2000 a month just for an hour of work per day. That could pay your rent or mortgage and then some. Even that amount of money would relieve a lot of financial stress.
The great thing is that the sky is the limit for how much you can earn. You decide how much to earn and that’s why it’s my favorite of all the stay at home dad jobs.
