One of the most crucial things that we need to do is define who our customers are. At the end of this post, you will understand how to define a target audience so you can write posts that they read.
Defining our target audience is going to be key in determining how to market our products or services to get the most of what we are trying to sell.
It is not to say that we are targeting everyone that would be interested in what we are offering, but rather we should focus on a very specific group of people that would most benefit from the products or services that we are offering be it digital products or physical products.

We are truly blessed to be living in a time that even the smallest start-ups have the ability to compete with the largest of corporations.
By having an online presence, we open our businesses up to the entire world. However, it’s just not realistic to focus on the entire population, but rather a small, defined segment. This is referred to as niche marketing.
By focusing in on this smaller audience, we will really be able to target those that are most likely to be interested in our products, and as an added bonus, we will develop an authority within our particular niche.
The first step on how to define a target audience will be to ask what is a target audience and then to determine our particular niche.
For example, someone that has a cleaning business could of course state that their niche is cleaning homes, but that would be way too broad.
We need to narrow this down as much as possible, so let’s ask some questions to help do that.
- Does the cleaner focus more on the interior or exterior jobs?
- What city does the cleaner live in and depending on the size of the city, what part of town does he/she reside?
- Does the cleaner focus more on new home construction, private homes, or offices?
- Are homes even in the equation, or does the cleaning business do more commercial jobs?
- How about large buildings and apartment complexes?
By asking and then answering some simple questions, we will be able to really pinpoint who our likely customers would be and then advertising can be focused on those specific groups.
Take your own business and try to break it down in a similar way to determine what your niche market is.
The previous questions were focusing on a cleaning business, but here are some general questions that may help you identify the demographics of your own niche market.
- What products or services do you offer?
- Are there any geographical considerations for your business?
- Does your product or service appeal to a specific gender?
- Are there income considerations for your target audience?
- What hobbies and activities do your customers participate in?
- What age group would your most likely customer fall into?
- Is your customer likely to have children?
- What occupations would be most interested in your products or services?
- Are your customers retired?
- Would your services be geared towards single or dual income families?
- Are education levels a factor for the services or products that you provide?
Those are just a few examples that I’ve pulled off of the top of my head. I’m sure with a little bit of focus on your individual offerings, you will easily come up with some other ideas that would help you determine the target audience for your particular business.
Now that we’ve invested a little time to determine who our targeted customers are, let’s focus a little on appealing to them.
It is important that we are able to identify with our customers in order to effectively communicate with them.
People that are considering parting with their money want to feel comfortable with the people that they are doing business with.
By learning about our customers and communicating with them in a manner that builds trust, we will be more likely to convert visitors into paying customers.
What is it that we’re offering that sets our business apart from the others that are out there?
Why should our prospective customers turn into actual paying customers?
Identify what makes you unique in your business and then let your customers know what this is. Give them a reason to buy from you.
Solve Your Audience Problem
Remember that when people are searching the internet and make their way to your websites, they are usually trying to find an answer to something. Keep this in mind when creating content.
Your web pages should be informative to your readers. The goal is to provide valuable and useful information that will keep your visitors engaged and keep them on your site.
Useful information builds trust and trust will result in conversions.
Make your content unique, remember that every post you write.

While the terms on your site may or may not make sense to a casual visitor, those that you are targeting would know what you are referring to and they would feel that you are one of their own.

The narrower you go the better and remember a niche can never be too narrow, I hear people say things like” ladies clothes is too narrow a niche” and I say that is too broad a niche.
Remeber the broader your niche is, the harder it will be marketing to a target audience.
It is always important that we learn how to write content that will be helpful and appeal to our target audiences.
Helpful content will make it easier to build trust with your website visitors. This trust will end up resulting in conversions and also better exposure, as people that trust you will be more likely to recommend and share your site with others.
